Quotable Quotes

Pokka 1000 kms - Suzuka - 26/27 August 2000

Pre event

Stephen Watson - Driver

"When I was told it would be hot in Japan and that Suzuka circuit was very technical, I did not realise it was to such an extreme.  I'm sure by the time we get to qualifying we will all have a grip on the circuit but the heat is amazing.  The Viper has always been very hot inside but the humidity is the highest we have had all year and the one hour stints will be a real test of stamina."

Vincent Vosse - Driver

"It is good to be back with the Chamberlain team - its almost a year since I last drove with the team, at Fuji Japan.  I am very happy to drive a car that I am now very experienced in and hope for a good weekend.  Its especially good to have the wild star Pompidou with us, so far......."

Xavier Pompidou - Driver

"I thank the team for their trust in me again.  Its a great pleasure to race with the team for a second Japanese 1000 kms race and to have two fine team-mates.  I hope we will have better luck than last year - I think we can finish on the podium."

Hugh Chamberlain - Team Principal

"With the very high temperatures in Suzuka, it is important to get the car to handle well.  The drivers will have to work hard and will not want to fight the car as well as the elements."

Post Qualifying

Stephen Watson - Driver

"We have had two good qualifying sessions today.  The combination of all three drivers is very quick and everything looks very promising for the race.  Xavier did an outstanding job to qualify the car 2nd in class and seventh overall.  Chamberlain have really brought the fight to the Lister team which have not been challenged so closely this year."

Vincent Vosse - Driver

"It is pleasant moment to be this close to the Lister - I feel that we can do a very good job tomorrow so I'm now just looking forward to the race.  Oh yes, and I'm looking forward to buying the beer tonight as I put the car in the gravel today!"

Xavier Pompidou - Driver

"I am confused because I'm between two opposite feelings.  I'm disappointed to miss the pole position for less than .02 of a second because of traffic on my last lap which is know as at least 3/10's quicker than the pole of the Lister!  but at the same time I'm happy by the performance of the car and the team..... I'm optimistic about tomorrow."

Hugh Chamberlain - Team Principal

"Qualifying for the Pokka 1000 has gone well.  In simple terms we finished 2nd to the Lister and 7th overall.  This does not show the tremendous work put in by the mechanics to get Stephen onto the track after Vincent had put the car in the gravel. Nor does it say anything of the fantastic efforts by Xavier in lapping in 2.05.9, only 2/10's slower than the Lister and the fastest time ever by a Viper at Suzuka.  Not a bad day."

Post Race

Stephen Watson - Driver

"It was fantastic to lead the class and, naturally, I am disappointed that we retire.  The mechanics were fantastic in the pitstops and everyone has put in an enormous effort.  But that's motor racing.  One things is certain - we have shown that we are really competitive."

Vincent Vosse - Driver

"I am very disappointed for all of us.  We started the weekend by setting up the car well, as our grid position showed.  I am disappointed after the effort all the team have done.  But we try again next year!"

Xavier Pompidou - Driver

"I don't know exactly what to say.  We were leading this race after a great job by everybody (mechanics, management and team-mates).  It was going so well.  But I know that we have shown that Chamberlain can beat anyone and In hope we can prove it as soon as possible.  Thanks to the Team for inviting me to this race, my first experience at Suzuka.  I hope I will be back!"

Hugh Chamberlain - Team Principal

"What a great day this could have been!  My lasting memory will be of Xavier - after catching the Freisinger Porsche he asked if it was the lead car.  When told it was, he asked he could overtake.  He was told that it was not necessary to race the Porsche as we were only 1 hour into a 6.5 hours race but that if he wanted to pass he could do so with care.  His response was 'OK, I will.'  And so he did!"
