The blue/white Viper GT-S was driven over the finish-line by Ni Amorim with a badly slipping clutch due to having been driven for the last 5 hours without being able to change down to 4th and 5th gear. However, Amorim managed to keep the car going, doing his last lap in over 7 minutes. As the next car in the race was several laps behind, there was no risk in losing the 14th overall position and 3rd in class position.
The factory ORECA Vipers took well deserved 1st and 2nd places, with the No 56 car only four laps behind.
Having driven 314 laps, 4274.4 km of the gruelling Le Mans circuit, the gearbox problems were the same as those that happened with the teams No 57 car, which had its gearbox changed early on it the race.
The No 57 car, driven by Tommy Erdos/Christian Vann/Christian Glasel, had other problems apart from the gearbox. A missfire on lap three, a split sump after some 2 hours, the changed gearbox and two starter motors had to be replaced during the race.
After all this the car started running much better in the second part of the race and finished in 22nd place (9th in GTS).
For the third year running, Chamberlain Motorsport has a 100% finishing score at the Le Mans 24 hours.
Since 1997 the team has entered five Viper GTS-Rs and finished each time. (1997 6th in GTs, 1998 5th & 7th in GT2, 1999 3rd & 9th in GTS).
This result underlines the achievement by the complete team and the quality of the mechanics.
