FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Thomas Erdos has landed a top drive for this years Le Mans 24 Hour race in June. He joins the Chamberlain Motorsport squad in their Chrysler Viper assault on the GT2 crown.
Erdos had been in negotiation with a number of teams prior to signing with Chamberlain. "This offered the best chance of success," said the delighted Brazilian. "Ive known (team boss) Hugh Chamberlain for many years. He has an excellent reputation and a fine record at Le Mans".
Chamberlain Motorsport has been a regular entrant in the French classic for almost twenty years. Throughout the eighties the team was at the forefront of the World Sportscar Championship, thrilling racegoers everywhere with a string of Tiga and Spice C2 racers. The teams success reached peaks in 1989 and 1992, when Hughs organisation lifted the world C2 titles. As regulations changed, so did the cars. Chamberlain chose to fly the flag for England, first as the official Lotus entry in 1993 and 94, and then with the evocative Jaguar XJ220 in 1995. The team missed a year in 1996, but returned in 97 as the leading privateer Viper outfit, a position theyve held since.
Last year both the teams cars reached the flag at Le Mans, finishing 5th and 7th in class. Aiming higher in 1999, theyve recently invested in a pair of brand new GTS-R Vipers. As a GT race car the Viper has excellent form, having won the GT2 class at Le Mans in 1997 and 1998, as well as going on to claim the FIA World GT2 Championship title in both years.
Thomas, with his reputation for excellent track discipline and considerable talent, not to mention valuable testing skills, should fit in well at Chamberlain. The team will be testing in the UK and has an FIA race at Monza in April prior to official pre-qualifying at Le Mans on May 2nd.
The ACO, organisers of the 24 Hour marathon, received 75 entries in advance of the March deadline, selecting 62 to go through to pre-qualifying. Of these, just 48 will make the cut in June. In the meantime, Thomas Erdos has his first British race on March 28th, when he returns to the race track at Silverstone in the NCK Racing Marcos LM600.
