Chamberlain
Motorsport in partnership with Chrysler Iberia ran a Chrysler Viper GTS-R in the final
race of the Spanish GT Championship for local hero Luis Perez-Sala and Portuguese star Ni
Amorim. Despite having done only half of the races of the series Perez-Sala was lying second in the chase for the GT-2 crown and had high hopes of overtaking the leader, Carlos Palau, in the Ford Mustang. The newly-built circuit just outside Valencia is a very good facility but is not an ideal Viper circuit. It requires a very nimble race car and although the Viper is as good as many, it is not at its best on tight corners. This was, unfortunately, not the only problem as from early on Friday during the untimed sessions both drivers were complaining that the engine did not feel right. However in the pit lane the car seemed to be alright and the car was quicker than everyone else. The input from the drivers continued until eventually the car came in with 9 of its 10 cylinders working and the team at last knew there was a real problem. All obvious components were changed and the car ran happily again until it went on to the circuit when it again lost a cylinder. Friday became Saturday which meant qualifying and Luis, with 9 or 10, cylinders was good enough for pole position. Ni, on the other hand, could only manage 3rd explaining that the engine was 'off' again. Sunday's warm-up arrived and Ni repeated that, despite all the work overnight, the engine was still 'off'. More head scratching, more component replacing but to no avail. Our heroes found the first race very dull as they only managed 5th place behind the rival Mustang. Before the second race, however, the problem was found after the mechanics had worked tirelessly to source the problem for nearly 24 hours. A wire to one of the injectors had broken and was connecting when the car was stationary but not when in motion. So Ni started the final race having to win and the Palau Mustang having to not finish at allow the Viper to claim the title. It was not to be. The Mustang ran strongly all race despite being followed by a cloud of his own oil smoke, the site of which gave the Chamberlain and Chrysler Iberia team hope. The Viper finished second in the Championship, though, a highly creditable placing after participating in only four of the six events but it was beaten by a better combination on the day. |
| Brief Synopsis of events (unofficial) | A Viper on 9 cylinders can qualify with the best but, on its day, the Palau Mustang could just not be beaten. Next year, however ...... |
