| Brief Synopsis
of events (official) |
Throughout untimed
practice the Chamberlain cars ran near the top of the lists, but only when qualifying was
underway was it obvious that they were a real threat to the all-conquering Oreca cars. Xavier Pompidou was quickest for nearly all the time, only an extreme effort by Jean-Phillipe Belloc enabled him to pass the Chamberlain Viper to claim the pole by a scant .03 of a second with the Vann/Glasel car not being far behind in fourth place. All looked well. In the race, the Oreca cars sped away from the start and took up their customary lead, but Pompidou hung on to them in third place showing that his qualifying pace was for real. The Christians duly followed in 7th having chosen to play the waiting game. The first pit stops were early. Fuel consumption was to play a huge part in the outcome of this race. Firstly the Oreca cars pitted well before the normal hour mark, indicating that they were unable to hold their pace without a third stop. Then the now leading Chamberlain car slowed dramatically, indicating that perhaps they too should have decided on a different strategy. Luckily Xavier was able to make the pit lane - to the relief of the Chamberlain crew - but he had lost valuable time and Michel Ligonnet returned in a lowly ninth. The Christians, however, had no such problems. They had overtaken the Wollek/Kaufmann Porsche, swept past the Konrad/Hezemans Porsche and moved to third to replace their team mates. As far as the top three were concerned, the race was now as good as over. The Oreca Vipers made no mistakes and the following Vann/Glasel Viper kept up the pressure but was unable to truly challenge. Vann and Glasel both drove as well as at any time in their careers - when this happens with a good car together with efficient pit stops, results follow. Back in the heat of battle, first Ligonnet and then, for the last stint, Vosse were trying their hardest to overcome the handicap their lack of fuel had caused. This they did and with one lap to go they were up to fifth. Unfortunately Msr Beretta decided that he had to lap the Chamberlain car on his way to second and collided with Vosse. The ensuing spin resulted in the loss of a place. Christian Vann drove serenely on to claim his and Christian Glasel's first podium finish for Chamberlain Motorsport. |
| Brief Synopsis of events (unofficial) | 'Vinny', 'Mickey' & 'Loopy' did great work especially as 'Mickey' had never driven a Viper before Friday, but the 'Christians' excelled and deserved their podium. |
