| Brief Synopsis
of events (official) |
Our lead car was
this week without it's regular driver. Ni Amorin, away in Spain driving our car in the
Jarama round of the Spanish GT Championship. Toni Seiler had his last race for the
team in 1999 at Donington. At this event the No 18 car was to be driven by ex-PKGL driver Vincent Vosse, Xavier Pompidou (who drove the prototype Ferrari for Doyle Rissi Racing in Atlanta the previous weekend) and John Hugenholtz, who last drove for us at Le Mans this year. Car 19 had its usual pairing of Christian Glasel and Christian Vann The first qualifying session was held in terrible conditions with torrential rain and much of the circuit covered in standing water. Vosse did an excellent job on an circuit that was new to him. After minor suspension adjustments Vosse qualified the car in an excellent third position. Pompidou adapted very quickly to a front engine car after his race the previous weekend in the Ferrari and Hugenholtz soon got to grips with the worsening conditions. Car 19 was badly damaged in an accident with Christian Glasel at the wheel, whilst looking as if the car would be qualified in 7th position. After careful examination it was decided there were insufficient parts and time to repair the car for the Homestead race. Instead chassis C6, which had been used at the Petit Le Mans race in Atlanta the previous weekend, was to be transported overnight in time to be prepared for the warm up. For the second session the weather had turned even worse and the officials decided to shorten it on the grounds of safety, the drivers of Car 18 using the available time to gain valuable circuit experience. Chassis C6 arrived at 0500 Sunday and the whole team did an outstanding job to ready the car in time for the warm up. Warm up was the first time any of the drivers had experienced a dry track. Car 18 bedded in new brakes and tires and adjusted the set up for dry conditions. Christian Glasel and Christian Vann now had to get used to a different car in a very short space of time, but they were pleased to at least be able to take the start of the race. One of the conditions that the Stewards of the meeting imposed on the team was that to allow us to replace our usual 19 car with another that the replacement had to start from the back of the grid. Christian Vann made a magnificent start and was soon passing cars with each lap, up to about 12th place after only three or four laps. Sterling stuff. However Christian had to pit early suffering from the heat and the effort handing over the car to Glasel. Both drivers put huge effort into the car over the next two hours and 20 minutes and brought it home in 8th place. Vosse started car 18 from the second row of the grid and put in some very consistent lap times and drove an excellent first stint. After just over an hour and in third place he handed the car over to Hugenholtz. There were a number of safety car incidents during this stint and he safely handed the car over to Pompidou with an hour to run. Pompidou drove a great last stint with some very quick lap times. The flag actually dropped three minutes late and Pompidou, as surprised as the rest of the team, finished in third after one of the Oreca cars run out of fuel on the last lap. Once again Chamberlain Motorsports were on the podium and once again we had beaten one of the works Chrysler cars. It was a very satisfying end to a hard weekend. We remain second in the Championship and go to Watkins Glen this weekend. |
